Upper Mustang, a region of stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage in Nepal, captivates travellers with its majestic landscapes and historical significance. In this article, we embark on a detailed journey from the bustling bazaar of Jomsom to the serene mud city of Lo Manthang, all the way to the Korala border with China, uncovering the secrets and charms of Upper Mustang.

Our Journey: Jomsom to Lo Manthang

Our adventure begins in Jomsom, a popular starting point for trekkers heading to Upper Mustang. As we prepare for our journey, a warm morning in November sets the perfect backdrop for the trip. With the surrounding mountains illuminated by the soft golden rays of the sun, we couldn’t be more excited. The road to Lo Manthang stretches about 90 kilometers, and will take approximately 7 to 8 hours to traverse, cutting across incredibly scenic landscapes along the Kali Gandaki River.

From Jomsom, we set off, transitioning to Kagbeni, where two routes diverge: one leads toward the revered Muktinath temple and the other towards the mystical land of Upper Mustang. The journey from Kagbeni marks the entry into Upper Mustang, where the terrain transforms into a desert-like environment characterized by its rain shadow positioning, resulting in dry, arid landscapes.

Captivating Scenery Along the Route

What's remarkable about the journey is the diversity of landscapes we encounter. The roads wind through valleys, steep hills, and canyons while revealing vibrant colours in the rock formations, giving the impression of being surrounded by a vast, open palette. Notable spots like Chaile, with its cavities sculpted in the walls, and the narrow gorges carved by the Kali Gandaki River, keep our spirits high despite the long ride.

  • Kagbeni: A historical village and the gateway to Upper Mustang.
  • Chaile and its stunning canyons.
  • The breathtaking views of the Kali Gandaki River merge with the river from Dolpa.

Arrival at Lo Manthang: The Mud City

After several hours of riding, marked by both exhaustion and excitement, we finally approached the majestic walls of Lo Manthang. Upon entering the city, we note its uniqueness: a complex historical tapestry represented by the ancient architecture and artistic grandeur that surrounds us. Known as the "Mud City," Lo Manthang is the capital of Upper Mustang and showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional Tibetan architecture.

The Lo Manthang Durbar Area

The Lo Manthang Durbar, or palace area, offers a glimpse into the historical significance of this region. Once a separate kingdom, it comprises of nine wards and protective walls constructed to keep its inhabitants safe from invasions. Historically, Lo Manthang was governed by a royal lineage:

• King Amad Pal founded the kingdom in 1380, and his legacy continues to permeate through the royal architecture and the people’s reverence for their former king.
• Present-day significance: We learned about the ongoing respect and loyalty the locals still profess for the royal family, particularly Prince Jigme Singye Palbar Bista, who embodies their historical ties.

The intricately designed structures echo stories of the past, with Buddhist monasteries, temples, and numerous artisans displaying traditional crafts dotting the landscape. The air is filled with an ancient vibe that transports one back in time.

Cultural Insights and Local Traditions

Exploring the heart of Lo Manthang, we interact not only with the residents but also share conversations with the prince, who outlines the historical context of the kingdom’s integration into Nepal. This aspect of the journey highlights how culture shapes the identity of this region and reinforces community bonds:

• The traditional practices of the Gurung and Tibetan communities manifest through their unique dialects, artifacts, and festivals.
• Major agricultural practices are localized within the safety of the village walls, emphasizing the significance of water sources and land management in their sustenance and survival.

Outdated but functional technology, such as foot-operated looms used for crafting local textiles, show a softer side to modernity in this remote part of the world.

The Journey to Korala: Borders Beyond Mountains

Our exploration does not end in Lo Manthang; instead, we are determined to reach the Korala border with China. Approximately 22 kilometers away, this final leg of our journey offers yet another set of stunning landscapes and rich experiences.

• Altitude Challenges: As we ascend towards Korala, some sprightly locals inform us about the altitude effect on vehicles—our Pulsar begins to show signs of struggle, embodying what we now dub as altitude sickness for machines!
• Scenic Exploration: Numerous small, robust villages dot the path, with traditional houses and extensive greenery around water sources, signaling where life thrives in these harsh terrains.

Arriving at Korala, standing at a stunning altitude of 4,650 meters, we find ourselves at the edge of two worlds, with vertiginous views marking the boundary between Nepal and China. The wind howls as we witness the pillars marking the border, and the experience draws a fitting conclusion to this incredible journey.

Our trip to Upper Mustang from Jomsom to Lo Manthang and further to the Korala border has been nothing short of transformative. The region is a reminder of how history, culture, and nature intertwine to create a narrative filled with layers of complexity and beauty.
